DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER

DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER
All told, governments killed more than 262 million people in the 20th century outside of wars, according to University of Hawaii political science professor R.J. Rummel. Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century

Congressional leaders reach deal on Patriot Act
mug.henry
Washington (CNN) - CNN has learned that Congressional leaders have agreed on a tentative deal that would extend the Patriot Act for four years.
The deal to extend the expiring law was sealed today by Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to senior Democratic and Republican sources.
The move would largely take the issue off the table for the next election by extending the law well beyond November 2012.

  2. A Kickin' DonkeyI'm sure either some very liberal bloggers [or some right-wingers PRETENDING to be liberals] will express outrage that the Patriot Act will continue.
While I oppose the patriot act as a means for the government to wire tap and evesdrop on American citizens without getting the Constitutionally Mandated warrants & court orders, I think it is smart politics for the Dems to keep this off the table in 2012.
President Obama has successfully CRUSHED the GOP's ability to hang the "Wimp" or "Soft-on-Defense" or "Doesn't-Support-The-Troops" or "Pals-Around-With-Terrorists" or "Won't-Keep-America-Safe" LABELS on the Democratic Party with the ELIMINATION of Osama bin Laden.
He can peel the Patriot Act back managerially through how the Justice Department conducts itself. And oppose it out right AFTER he is RE-ELECTED.

  16. billYou mean to tell me the reason to keep this Constitutional shredding machine is to not have a debate that would bring the citizens of America a chance to vote on their rights being trampled by the insane people in Washington.

  17. swinGood to see that when it comes to extending the power of government over the citizens and infringing on their freedoms, both parties can reach consensus. Do you really think there is any difference between the Republicans and the Democrats?

  18. GarrettGreat, we can be bipartisan when we violate our citizens.
Gotta love that guy's post too, let's dump everything on Obama and praise a violation of our civil rights.

  25. MaxI find it hysterical the same GOP reps who ran for election in 2010 on a platform of a strict interpretation of the Constitution are endorsing the Patriot Act, which does nothing but take a massive dump on personal rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. Political hypocrisy knows no bounds. What a joke- they moan about the government overstepping its bounds on things like health care, but don't care about giving the government the right to throw US citizens in jail indefinitely for no reason.

  28. BobThe Patriot Act is nothing but a misguided vision, implemented post 9-11 in an era of fear. There is nothing patriotic about spying on American citizens in the name of "terrorism". This bi-partisanship continues to highlight these politicians lack of understanding of the bill, or worse, their intentional subversion of American Freedom.

  30. Cam Shaw"good to see some bipartisan action"? You're a fool! The Patriot Act does zero for the American citizen, besides take away their rights. Pull your head out of your arse, neither party gives a damn about you or me. If you had a brain, you would see that.
    May 19, 2011 08:27 pm at 8:27 pm |
  31. GuyIt never will be removed, for better or worse.
It's just important to understand what is good and bad about the Act, and where there needs to be some degree of revision.
Can't say I'm surprised it was extended though.

  32. MN PatriotAnd someone actually believes that the powers that be would allow the tool for the enslavement of the common American would be allowed to expire?

  33. NunyaSo what sort of 'deal'? It's all extended so the Democrats just caved?
    May 19, 2011 08:33 pm at 8:33 pm |
  34. Jesseca5That just about cinches it for Al Bin Obama. It looks like the country will be in for four more years of misguided directions from the oval office and the congress. The GOP may as well pick up their marbles and go home....they have lost big.

  36. American CitizenWhat politician today wouldn't vote for something with the name "Patriot" attached to it..??!!
The naming of this shameful and incredibly unpatriotic "act" is a sick joke!
The most "Patriotic" thing Congress could do is expose it for what it is, and get rid of it!
Give us all of our Constitutional rights back, and don't ever restrict them again.

  38. Adam8% unemployment, down from 11%, deficits put in place primarily by Bush, Debt that has been spiraling for years with the only reductions coming under Clinton, Obamacare would have helped many people.
    May 19, 2011 08:47 pm at 8:47 pm |
  39. Lee OatesThe Patriot Act will never go away, it will only be added to until the US becomes a full-fledged Fascist state. Our freedoms will be slowly eroded until there are none left. All in the name of "Security".
    May 19, 2011 08:47 pm at 8:47 pm |
  40. JimAnd Liberty continues to die. It's sad that so many people believe that the PATRIOT act is a good thing. For a country founded and so proud of it's freedom it's amazing how willing we are to let it be taken from us. Not by terrorists but by ourselves, all for the comfort of the illusion of security.

  41. AnonymousThe greatest raid on American's civil liberties in our history, and all it warrants is 3 paragraphs buried in CNN's website. We get the government we deserve. "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Truth"

  43. NHPatriot1776All of these traitors need to be removed from office. The Patriot Act makes a mockery of the US constitution and denies US citizens of their 4th amendment rights. All of you should be ashamed.

  44. RobThis is an absolute outrage. Way to whither away the personal freedoms protected by the Constitution and undone by this horrid act.

  46. AaronYour leaders on Capitol Hill have once again decided that you do not deserve privacy and are once again violating your 4th amendment rights. Enjoy!

I'm glad to see them work together, but I wish it would've been to repeal the Patriot Act rather than extend it
