DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER

DEATH BY GOVERNMENT: GENOCIDE AND MASS MURDER
All told, governments killed more than 262 million people in the 20th century outside of wars, according to University of Hawaii political science professor R.J. Rummel. Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century

Obama’s red ink grows by $2.7 trillion

EDITORIAL: Obama’s red ink grows by $2.7 trillion

CBO revises estimate of deficit spending in president’s budget

When dealing with the massive spending levels of the federal government, a small rounding error can add up to big money. Now it looks like the amount of debt President Obama’s budget will generate in the coming decade will be $2.7 trillion more than expected. Oops.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on Friday updated its analysis of the government’s red ink and found the fiscal hole deeper than expected. “For the 10-year projection period as a whole, the deficit that would result under the President’s proposals - $9.5 trillion, or 4.8 percent of GDP - would be $2.7 trillion greater than the cumulative deficit projected under current law,” CBO’s report explained.
In concrete terms, that means today’s public debt of $14.2 trillion will balloon to $23.7 trillion by the year 2021. For each American who pays taxes, that represents a $260,000 liability. The jumbo-sized deficits have a real impact on taxpayers who will end up spending more of their money on interest. That’s the case under Mr. Obama’s budget, where interest payments nearly quadruple from $260 billion to $931 billion a year in 2021. That means 3.9 percent of the nation’s entire productive output will be devoted not to funding present government operations, but to covering the excess spending of an administration long past.
The House Republican majority has been saying the right things about reducing government spending - reducing any amount of current-year expenditures represents a breakthrough achievement in this town. The problem is that even Republicans are using Washington math, not actual arithmetic. Their proposal is to cut $61 billion from the president’s proposal, not from last year’s spending. Even if the Republican majority could push their plan into law, 2011 spending would be $3.59 trillion - a 4 percent increase over the $3.46 trillion spent in 2010.
Americans who have cut back during the tough economic times have no patience for a Congress and administration that refuse to show any amount of true restraint. A real cut starts at $200 billion, and the Republicans should demand no less.

will US stop obama from spending all the hard working tax payer money?
  • @yankee - You can't impeach someone for that. Pick a better reason.

@all - So NONE of our lawmakers can even keep the same increase of debt as we had in 2011? Why do we pay these guys? They obviously refuse to do their job and only care about getting re-elected.

Why is the debt of taxpayers, authorized by a tax cutting GOP Congress, "Obama's deficit?"
Is this supposed to be journalism, or just a cartoon for the stupid?
  • ymj
It was not authorized by a Republican Congress.

and while so many americans argue over whether it is the fault of the democrats or the republicans... the ship is going down! while $14T now, the gross national debt will be $17T by the next presidential inauguration, > 7 times the federal government's annual income.. there is virtually nothing to do in the short run to avoid that. whether the debt was created because of national defense, prescription drugs for seniors, high-paid federal employees, free healthcare, or welfare... it's our problem now. neither party can be honest with the voters, because virtually none of us want to hear the truth... and no one is willing to make the necessary sacrifices. our politicians are generally "bought & paid for", and so focused on re-election that actually solving problems gets in the way of staying in power.
funny thing with bubbles... everything looks OK, until all of a sudden, it isn't. 2011 bears remarkable resemblance to 2007. money is historically cheap. we are lending irresponsibly (to the federal gov't). and we are "hoping" that our economy will grow our way out of this fiscal mess. one big hiccup with interest rates or the international bond market... and the house of cards comes down.

The debt was in place before Republicans won control last November and took office just around 75 days ago. The Republican proposals can't even get to pre-Obama numbers, specifically 2008, because to do so would be to cut about a Trillion Dollars out of the budget. That debt is squarely on Obama. Spin it how you want, that is a fact. Just to put the mess into perspective, you know.
  • Bushcare Part-D is projected to cost over 9 Trillion dollars by 2021 and that is squarely on the shoulders of the Republicans who passed it in 2003 and did not fund it. It was a big gov't giveaway to big pharma. The new F-35 joint strike fighter program is projected to cost a trillion dollars once all the units are delivered and the cost to maintain them are added, The program was authorized Oct 2001, under the Bush administration with a Republican congress. The TSA was formed under the Bush administration and is considered the largest growth of government since Medicare was passed. All the current Republican leaders currently in Congress voted yes for all these programs and you are asking them to be fiscally responsible?

Try to spin it anyway you want but the majority of the current national debt occurred while Republicans were in the White House (Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush). Obama needs to cut all the corporate welfare out of the budget (farm subsides, energy subsides (oil, ethanol, nuclear), bank subsides) and call our troops home from Japan, Germany, South Korea (let them pay for their own defense instead of draining our treasury). But it won't happen because the Republicans depend on the money from these groups for their elections as do many Democrats and need to appear strong on defense. So they will cut little things like PBS, Planned Parenthood, and WIC because it sounds good to the base but really doesn't do anything to really cut the deficit spending. It's like removing the nuts from a sundae while the ice cream melts.

Severus Snape: right on point. Add illegal wars off the books (ie: with SS money), Tax cuts for wealthy/business that still haunt us. To be serious about deficit/debt reduction we need to include DEFENSE. Period.
To use Tea-publican talking points about cutting SS, we will never cut what the Government OWES to SS for both parties raiding it.
This article's tag-line reflects the GOP-Tea-publican attack line for the election. Period.
Our deficit/debt issues started long before President Obama came to pass, but he has not helped. It's time we look at the entire mess and cut out the cash freeforall that has plunged us into this mess for decades and finally make sound cuts. This nickle and diming is only redress to supporters.
    Stop political and start serious.

We are starting to realize because of their actions that government as it now is constituted will ruin the country for good. The Democrats in just 2 years of total control have put the country in a position of peril that we might not be able to get out of even if we can get rid of every profligate Democrat now in Congress and Presidency. The way this rope a dope is played by the Democrats is that they give to the House a budget that is so far out of line it would be the beginning of the end of our country. Why doesn’t the House give to the President a balanced budget and say this is what we can afford and no more, make the Democrats justify everything. Do away with whole departments and agencies unless they can prove worth. Stop the games with the economic health of the United States. The coming election will see a massive reduction in the Piven proponents, the quid pro quo with the unions, go after those like Barney Frank and the others who profited because of illicit and illegal insider trading and other 100’s of criminal endeavors. Get tough!
  • RepCop
Sorry Ronnor, but if you looked at the facts, a Republican Congress reversed a USG surplus to a deficit in only two years. Please be consistent and accurate in your blame game.
